Hungary's most famous director, Istvan Szabo, is 74 and hasn't released a film for six years; so fans will appreciate the chance to see what the great man can still do. His 1981 masterwork, Mephisto, won an Oscar and brought the extraordinary actor, Klaus Maria Brandauer, to international attention. This new film also reflects Szabo's main concerns of power games and charismatic personalities and once again, is built around a central commanding performance, this time by Dame Helen Mirren.
Magda,, a female writer struggling for success, employs an elderly woman called Emerance (Helen Mirren), to be her housekeeper. From the very first encounter, it is clear that Emerence is no orrdinary maid. Although everyone in the neighbourhood knows and respects her, no one knows anything about her private life or has ever been allowed to enter her home. However, a dramatic event in the writer’s life prompts Emerence to unveil glimpses of her traumatic past – a past which sheds light on her very peculiar behaviour
